THE COACHING CONTEXT

The Geometry Shapes

Students need to know what shapes to look for and identify before they begin their search for objects to photograph. The teacher will give each student a one-page guide that shows and names the basic geometric shapes (see Figure 7.3) and will suggest that students write the names and locations of the objects they want to photograph on this guide. Students can use the guide to help them keep track of the examples they identified and where these examples are located. This will facilitate the team members’ work as they view the examples together, decide on the best example for each shape, and take the photos.

Photo Basics

Some students in the class may be very skilled at taking photos. Others may have never handled a camera. Teachers will poll their classes to identify the experts and the beginners before making team assignments so that they can distribute the experts among the teams in the class. The teacher also will help students find sources of information about photography. The school or classroom library may have helpful books or pamphlets. The Internet is another good source of information. A good search engine will list hundreds of sites with information about “how to take good photos.”

Some students may offer the use their own cameras to their teams, and the camera owner will teach teammates how to use the camera. The teacher may provide each team with a disposable camera, purchased with budgeted funds or with funds provided by students or a parent-teacher organization, or the school may have digital cameras that students can sign out for use outside of class. The teacher and class will decide how to pay for the film processing, if needed, and printing or printmaking supplies. One-use, disposable cameras can be processed at many discount stores, and these stores also print photos taken with digital cameras and sell photo paper that students can use, along with the school’s computer equipment, to print their own digital photos. The students and teacher may want to ask a booster group or parent-teacher organization for help with any expenses, or the teacher may request funds for photo developing and printing from the school.
