MANDY INGBER’S

‘HAPPY YOGA’ ROUTINE

THE AUTHOR AND EXPERT SHARES A SIMPLE HEART-OPENING SEQUENCE FROM HER NEW BOOK

Mandy Ingber’s students include Brooke Shields, Kate Beckinsale and, of course, Jennifer Aniston. But yoga, says Ingber—whose next book, Yogalosophy for Inner Strength, comes out May 10—is for everyone. Ingber offered this preview and spoke to People.

No matter what type of body you have, breathing and moving the body in conjunction with the breath are things you can do at any level. Sports stars use it to improve their game. Celebrities use it to have great bodies but also to maintain a sense of calm in the midst of so much attention.

This sequence has a lot of heart-opening movements—it energizes you. Five times a week in the morning would be a nice start to incorporating yoga. More than having great asses, a wonderful fringe benefit is the empowerment. That’s what we all get addicted to: feeling our power and knowing how strong we are. When I was younger, I had eating disorders. I was a little exhausted when I first started teaching, and I thought, “Who’s going to listen to me?” So no matter what I looked like, I always would teach: “I love myself, I love my body, I feel sexy.” My body fell into place naturally. I was heavier, but I found that people still wanted to listen to what I had to say. They were feeling the love. You won’t get into shape faster if you’re beating yourself up.
