CHAPTER 4
Nicole wrote down the intersection that she’d seen in her vision, then grabbed her red hat, her coat and purse, and headed out of her apartment on the run—or as much of a run as she could manage with her sore foot. Her heart was pounding as she waited in the hall for the elevator. When the doors opened, she almost leapt into the car. As the car started to move, she automatically reached for her head, felt the soft red wool and thought of Dominic. There was so much riding on the vision she’d had. She wished he was with her. Maybe then she wouldn’t feel so anxious.
When she got out to the curb to hail a cab, it dawned on her how cold it had become. She buttoned her coat all the way to the collar while wishing she’d brought her scarf. A single drop of rain fell on her face just as she realized she was only wearing one shoe. There was nothing on her injured foot but the bandages and a heavy sock.
Not only was she without a shoe, but she was also without an umbrella. She glanced at her watch, then discarded the notion of going back upstairs. In the grand scheme of what was about to happen, the possibility of getting drenched was definitely unimportant, so she turned her attention to hailing a cab.
The driver of the first empty cab to come down the street flew past without even noticing her. When she saw the second coming, she began waving and yelling as loudly as she could, but that driver, too, somehow missed her. When she saw the third one coming and realized it was empty, she jumped off the curb and ran into the street.
The driver hit the brakes, fishtailing slightly and leaving two streaks of rubber on the street as he came to a stop only inches from where she was standing. He was still cursing at the top of his lungs as she dived into the backseat.
“Drive!” she screamed and, not trusting herself to give the proper address, reached toward the bulletproof partition between them and shoved the written address through the payment opening, so it fell onto the seat beside him. “There’s the address. Take me there, and hurry. It’s a matter of life and death.”
The cabby was still angry as he glanced at the address. “Right, lady. I’ve heard that before.”
Nicole leaned forward, stared at the back of his head for a minute and said, “You’ve been taking money from the church offering for the past six weeks instead of putting it in. Father Patrick knows you’re doing it and is waiting for your confession.”
The cabbie paled, his eyes widening in disbelief as he stared at her in the rearview mirror.
“How did you know that?”
“The same way I know that this ride is a matter of life and death. Now drive—and hurry!”
He took off, leaving a second set of marks on the street as Nicole grabbed for her seat belt.
