Due to the children’s overall interest in birds, and in particular the fallen bird, we took this piece of documentation back to the children at our morning meeting for further discussion. The discussion seemed to help the children reflect on what had happened to the bird in the story and why it happened. The bird survived, and they seemed relieved by that. “It’ll be okay. It was just knocked out for a bit,” they said. In addition, we were able to clarify that sometimes a transparent window can reflect like a mirror. The teachers began to think about ways for children to experiment with this concept at the science table and at our light table. In this way, the birds-and-buildings exploration generated a short investigation of light and reflection.

A Moment of Friendship

This friendly moment occurred in the writing area, as children experimented with print. Since it is early in the semester, we are watching for signs of connections between children as they form new relationships. In this case, printing alongside each other provided a shared experience. Both children have an S in their name, and they discovered this while watching each other print their names. This moment demonstrates for us the power of shared experiences—the delight in discovering something with a partner, finding a connection, and being together in that moment. We will continue to search for ways for children to work together.
