7. Press your work frequently and carefully.

Press your patchwork gently to avoid stretching the fabric. You may press the seams open or to one side, depending upon your preference. If you do choose to press them to one side, make sure that the pressed seams are positioned opposite to each other when you stitch the pieces together, so that the bulk does not accumulate in one area.

8. Join a beginner quilting class.

Learn and understand the basics of patchwork and quilting by taking at least one beginner class. There are many websites dedicated to patchwork that offer online classes for beginners. If you’re lucky, you may even find a free one! You may also check if there’s quilting classes available near your area so you can interact with other quilters in person. Otherwise, look for video tutorials that teach novice quilters some beginner skills, as well as simplified techniques for many traditional patchwork block designs.
