She spent the rest of the school-day obsessively cleaning out the kitchen cupboards. It was that or collapse on her bed with a bottle of wine while weeping over their family photo albums. She rearranged mugs, threw out a bottle of red wine vinegar that was two years out of date—how? She was a militant housekeeper—and ruthlessly erased every trace of ground cumin or nutmeg from the shelves. Her blood boiled. Anger was far more welcome than heartbreak. She wondered if he was an actual, clinical sociopath. He seemed so unmoved by the pain he’d caused her or these other women that it was genuinely freaky.

And tonight were the fucking Year 3 mums’ drinks. Of all the nights to have to socialise. She had zero interest in going, but as the class rep and organiser of the event, she had no choice. It would be a comfort to talk to Astrid, at least. Their situations were different—Astrid had been cast aside by Mark, while Lorenzo had apparently been happy to have his cake and eat it—but she knew Astrid would understand in a way few others could. They could drink away the memory of their sleazy, philandering husbands together.

Besides, she wanted the name of Astrid’s divorce lawyer. She couldn’t bear to have Lorenzo in her bed or fathering their daughters full time. Her heart hurt at the pain this would cause them, even if she’d withhold the details from them for as many years as she could. But there was no coming back from this; she couldn’t expose them to his disposable attitude towards women, and even more importantly, she couldn’t model wifely behaviour that involved standing by your man when he betrayed you and your fellow females.
