The Vulnerability of the Whistle-blower

The Parable of the Talents

(Matt. 25:14–30; Luke 19:11–27)

The parable of the talents or mnas, found in Matt. 25:14–30 and Luke 19:11–27, is a curious parable. The differences in the parable as found in Matthew from that found in Luke are significant enough to raise questions about whether they are different versions of a common source or distinctive variations on a common theme. Do we have one parable redacted by two evangelists or two oral performances using similar themes? The matter is further complicated by Luke, who has apparently interwoven vestiges of a second parable (the throne claimant; cf. Luke 19:14, 15a, 27) to create a longer version of the parable of the talents. Not surprisingly, none of these variations has kept interpreters of the parable from settling on its theological meaning. This chapter reads the parable as codifying the world of retainers in the household of a powerful elite.
