CHRYSANTHEMUM

Most likely to be seen languishing in cellophane at petrol stations, chrysanthemums get a raw deal. These late autumn blooms are criminally underestimated, boasting a wealth of special varieties.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Brush

Size 4

Colours

Sap green

Cadmium red

Cadmium orange

1.

Draw a faint pencil stem with curved leaf branches and a broad intersecting curve for the flower base. Dilute your cadmium red and cadmium orange on your palette. You aren’t pre-mixing a colour, but as you paint the petals, create a range of shades by picking up a little of each on your size 4 brush in varying proportions. Paint C-curves to form the central cup of petals. Press down your brush at the tip of each petal to create a softer, bulbous end as opposed to a pointed tip.
