Big brush application. Any large brush produces meaty strokes of colour. Stiffer bristles draw out more colour while soft brush hairs can prove less effective but do produce a grainier texture. I do find soft bristles much more effective for adding details.

How to Pick Up Neat Acrylic Paint

For my acrylic paintings I use a circular palette with deep wells that contain a fairly large amount of paint. This way there are fewer interruptions in loading more paint into the palette during the course of the painting and larger quantities seem to slow the drying time, allowing colours to run into each other. Never leave palettes of paint by heaters or in direct sunlight. Once acrylic has hardened very little can be done to rejuvenate the pigment. I generally paint with neat acrylic, which means very little or no water or medium is used. However, I do damp my brush to retain a certain amount of moisture. This does minimize the chance of paint drying on and ruining brushes. During painting I dab brushes in each well to pick up colour, sometimes multiple colours, and avoid swirling the brush inside the wells to dig out more colour. This can inadvertently mix the paint together creating, very muddy pigments and spoils the wells of colour completely. This likelihood is kept to a minimum when just dabbing in and out. Once the colours and especially light hues become spoilt I simply skim away some of the top layer so the purity of the colours remains underneath.
