Coloured Inks

I have used inks a great deal over the years. They are intensely coloured industrial dyes, usually sold in very small bottles. Its lack of popularity, except among illustrators, is probably because of its fierceness of colour. If used straight from the pot it will sink straight into the paper, and be indelibly fixed there.

It is often not appreciated just how this intense colour can be watered down until it is a mere hint or blush of beautiful delicate colour. It is wonderful for flower paintings, and for painting shadow. The appropriate tone is simply washed over our shadowed area without disturbing the work underneath.
