1. Draw Thumbnail Sketch

Draw a small thumbnail sketch to make sure you can maintain the sense of distance through the use of values, along with the very wet, reflective quality of the still water at the end of a late autumn day.

2. Add First Colors

Because everything is infused with a sunset glow, do a varied wash over the whole paper—sky, water, far shore and hill, foreground and trees—everything. To combine a soft gray sky and its reflection in the water as well as the warmth of the dying sunset, mix yellow, orange and dark blue watercolor crayon, blending them well, but vary the color from warm to cool where you need to suggest sunset light.
