Chapter 4

PLANT STUDIES

In this chapter we shall move on to painting all parts of the plant – flowers, stems, leaves and berries – so that you can further develop the skills you learnt in the previous chapters. It can be thrilling to see your flowers come to life as you gradually build up your colour washes to create velvety textures and deep colours or apply the most delicate washes of colour to portray white flowers on white paper.

Painting a complicated structure such as that of a hyacinth or applying fine hairs to soft pink foxglove flowers can seem daunting, but you will find step-by-step guidance to help you through. Understanding how to match colours will enable you to achieve successful paintings and take the anxiety out of using watercolour, a wonderful medium but one where you cannot erase mistakes. Practice is the key to success.
