Consider this unfinished clay sculpture as another version of sketching. Note how far back from the front of the face the ear sits in the two three-quarter views.

Be aware of proportions, but don’t be hampered by grids, maps or too many rules. Feel the face with your eyes. Let your mind translate the movement in and out of the topography of the face as if you were touching it with your fingers and forming it in clay.

Look at this unfinished clay head. The benefit of studying sculpture is that complication of color has been removed. If we were to draw or paint this form monochromatically, we could easily study the planes. Imagine touching the shapes of the face as you draw or paint. Feel the shapes. Use thumbs to flatten the glabella, dig out the sockets of the eyes, build back in the eyes and lids, build up the bridge of the nose and move from the ridge of the nose down to the cheeks. Flare in the wings of the nostrils, place the septum and the philtrum as they round onto the lips, indent the corners of the mouth, curve into the chin, and take care not to make the zygomatic bone too high or sharp in this young boy.
