2 STEP TWO

Butterfly: Blend with growth direction between values to create a gradation of color across the sections. Base rest of wing with an equal mix of Black + Raw Umber. With dirty brush, tap in dark section lines between red sections. With tracing paper pattern, transfer all markings on wing margins onto wet paint (see Painting Butterfly Wings). Base the dark side of the body with Raw Umber + Raw Sienna. Base the light side with Raw Sienna. Thin Black + Raw Umber and apply the antennae.

Flower: Blend between values with the lengthwise growth direction of the petals. Highlight with mix of White + Cadmium Yellow Pale. Base balance of center with Raw Sienna and blend where values meet, using a choppy stroke of a no. 2 bright.

Leaf/Stem: Blend where values meet with growth direction of leaf and stem. Apply highlights using light value green mix + more White.
