A Vancouver Island whaling station is seen here. There are two whales on the ramp, and two more in the water. One of the whales has had about half of its blubber removed in a single piece.
The sperm whale on this platform is ready to be flensed. In photographs like this, the head flenser normally poses on top of the whale in the center with his flensing tool—as seen here. It is his responsibility to make the first major cuts into the whale, which will allow the blubber to come off in several very large pieces.
