A lump grew fast in my throat. Was it because I knew he was talking about my having kids with someone other than him, or because I knew what it cost him to even discuss helping me in such a way? I cleared my throat.

“Honestly, I’ve never even thought about having them. I guess because with the Gavinis being after my father and I, I just never let myself imagine a life with another person, much less a family.
