Chapter Eighteen
Once Trey was on the road and had begun to cool off, he was embarrassed by his behavior. What must Sara think of him, driving away in a fury like that? His family was one thing; they had seen his temper before, but Sara – and Jessie? He almost turned the truck around so he could go back and apologize. But no, he thought, it was none of their business. He was completely sober – hadn’t had a drop in days, and he didn’t intend to, but as he neared the turnoff for the road to his cottage, for some reason he went straight. He wasn’t finished thinking yet, and driving had always helped in that way. The next thing he knew he was in town and in front of The Painted Duck. He parked and stared at the entrance, debating with himself whether he wanted to go in or not. He knew what temptations awaited inside. Even though he had had a nice meal earlier at his parents’ house, he could go for one of those juicy burgers they were famous for. Yes, that was it, he decided, a burger would hit the spot.
As soon as he had settled into a booth, Wendy, a long time server and old friend of Trey’s, approached.

“Not a lot, Wendy. How are you?”
“Fine, but I’ve been a little lonely, if you know what I mean.”
Trey had to laugh; she was so obvious it was shameful. “I’m sure there are plenty of guys who would like to help you with your, uh, situation.”
She threw back her head to laugh, exposing a smooth youthful neck, just waiting to be nibbled. “There’s no shortage of men out there, but they’re not you. What do ya say? We always have a good time. Wanna keep a girl company?”
Trey inhaled deeply. Saying no to this little invitation was very difficult, but he was a changed man, wasn’t he? “We always did have a good time, you’re right, but I’m laying low for a while. I have some things to sort out.”
She pouted with an exaggerated child-like expression. “Well, if you change your mind, you know where to find me. A man can’t go too long without some entertainment, ya know what I mean?” She paused for dramatic effect. “Now, what can I get for ya? The usual?”
Trey hesitated for a moment. The usual for him was a burger, fries, and a beer – or two, or three. He looked up
