Components of the Superiority Mindset

The superiority mindset is thus rooted in three traits that reflect the various superiority theories and scales.

1. Paternalism: The need to be in control of others (Hobbes’s view)

2. Competition: The demand to be better than others in ability (Adler’s view)

3. Authority: The desire to set the standard of acceptable behavior and define oneself and others through that lens (SDO’s principles)

As it relates to dominance and superiority in the United States, the prevailing mentality is that white skin and European origin coupled with middle- or upper-class income equal superiority. This superiority mindset dominates the social, political, and educational landscape in the United States and guides greater society’s policies, practices, and behaviors, and it has a profound impact on achieving equity in American schools. I want to be clear and state for the record that there is nothing wrong possessing white skin or European heritage and achieving middle- or upper-income levels. In fact, I would expect members of those communities to be proud of their accomplishments and heritage and celebrate them. However, it becomes problematic when members of any community view their heritage, culture, or norms as the standard that all should subscribe to and use their influence to dominate people who may be of a different background or income level, especially when they publically claim that equality is important.
