Chapter Eleven

Conversation Piece

Melanie woke to the sound of metal clattering against the bars of her cell. She sat up quickly on the cot, turning to see Jonathan smiling at her through the bars with a bundle of cuffs and chains in his hands. Waking in the cell brought back the same feelings that she had been experiencing before her nap, conflicting feelings of fear and excitement. It was becoming hard to tell where one began and the other ended. Jonathan stood by the door, beckoning her.

“You have some decisions to make now, Melanie,” he said as she reached up to remove the towel. She must have been sleeping a little while at least, because her hair was drier now. Dropping the towel on the cot, she padded barefoot across the floor to stand on the other side of the cell door from him.

“What kind of decisions?” she asked.

“Now is when you get your grade for the scene,” he winked as he reached through the bars and began to wrap a chain around her waist. She did not resist as he pulled it tightly into place against the material of her smock. She saw that there were individual cuffs hanging from either side of the belt. “So now you get to apply the points you earned, to determine your levels in the three categories.”

“How did I do?” she asked as he brought her left hand down to the waiting cuff. He ratcheted it closed, pressing the cold steel into her wrist.

“You scored a C at guessing which role we would be playing,” he answered as he locked her right hand in the other cuff. The chain from her waist to the cuff was short, allowing her to bring her hands only slightly away from her hips and not far enough to bring them together. “It would have been a D if it hadn’t been for your last minute correction.”

“That’s not fair,” she replied as he squatted down. A chain ran from the front of the belt down to the floor, where it ended with another pair of cuffs. She watched as he closed them around her ankles. “You didn’t really give me a lot to work with until the end.”

“Not everything in life is fair,” he chuckled as he stood again. She saw the familiar collar with its metal box in his hand. “Especially not here.”

Melanie leaned forward as he wrapped the collar around her neck. She felt the prongs within it once more press against her throat as it was buckled and locked in place. Her toes curled against the floor as she suddenly realized how easily she had let him bind her once more. Without a word or a threat from him, she had allowed him to place her in the transport chains. She knew that she did not really have a choice. If she had resisted, he could have just left her in the cell until she gave in. But it frightened her to realize that she had not even considered disobedience.
