Mannagrass; Glyceria

Description: Mannagrass has long narrow leaves and a long seed head. It is often found growing on stream banks and around seeps, and its long leaves sometimes hang into the water and float.

Preparation and Uses: The seeds are gathered with a seed beater, winnowed to remove the chaff, and used as a thickening for soups and stews. They can be ground on a metate for flour. Mannagrass is one of the better-tasting grains found growing in the West.
