‘Pepper!’ she cried, greeting the handsome Connemara pony like the old friend that he was, and leaping into his saddle. Pepper–who was Netta’s horse, and had proved himself a brave warrior in their battle against Dr DeWilde the previous year–gave a happy neigh of welcome, jumped off the merry-go-round, and headed for the woods, with the first wolves hot on his heels. They gave chase, but Pepper galloped faster than any wolf, snorting with excitement and pride, and very soon the wolves were left far behind.

A short while later, Pepper came to a halt in the graveyard on the edge of the woods. He stood by Zella’s grave and neighed and pawed the ground as if waiting for something. Storm slid off his back and kneeled by her mother’s headstone. Any hopped a little distance away and started catching flies with her long tongue.

‘What shall I do?’ whispered Storm, hugging the slender silver birch tree. ‘I want to take the pipe to the Underworld so it can do no more harm, but I’m so afraid.’

Tears fell down Storm’s cheeks. The wind rustled through the trees and somewhere on the breeze Storm thought that she heard her mother’s voice saying, ‘Come to me, Storm. Come to me. I would like to see you one last time.’

The wind dropped and the graveyard was still. Storm stood up and she was smiling softly. ‘Right, Any,’ she said. ‘No dilly-dallying. We’ve got a job to do. We need to find Aurora before Belladonna does, and deliver the pipe to the Underworld.’
