Village Voice, August 26, 1959. Life into art, with a twist.

Financially solvent for the first time in his life, and with a live-in girlfriend (Judy Sheftel, whom he would marry two years later), Feiffer moved out of the duplex he’d shared with Norton Juster on State Street to a tonier address on Montague Terrace, an elegant brownstone row a few steps from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and its thrilling view of lower Manhattan. On State Street, the two friends had divided the utilities, with Juster paying the phone bill every month and Feiffer paying gas and electric. “In the process of arranging things for the move,” remembers Juster, “Jules moved the contract into my name. It must have slipped by me in the bills, and one day the bell rang downstairs. It was the guy from Con Ed to read the meter. I was standing in the hall and the lights went out. I finally figured it out.

“A few days later, a strip comes out in the Voice; someone’s lights are cut off. The Con Ed guy called me, and he said, ‘That strip of Mr. Feiffer’s? It was about you.’ ”
