I collected these four scores where available for every nominee in the categories of Best Documentary – the subject of this chapter – and Best Picture – which I include in as many chapters as possible due to its outsized importance.

As you might imagine, these four sets of scores are quite related to each other. To show this precisely, we can use a common statistical metric called correlation, which is similar to the colloquial definition of the word “correlation.” For this metric, a 0 means that no relationship exists between two sets of data, a 1 means that the two sets agree perfectly, and the higher the number, the more agreement between the two sets.
