“I’m not gone,” said a voice. “I can see

your nest, Orris the rat. I can see your tail.”

Orris turned around in the slipper; he

stuck his head out.

A single yellow eye was shining through

the hole in the boards, studying him.

“What’s a lion, Orris?” said Timble.

“A lion is a deadly, enormous creature

forty-two times larger than you are, all

claws and teeth.”

“Oh,” said Timble. “What happens to

the mouse and the lion?”

“If I tell you, will you go away?” said the rat.

“Yes,” said the owl.

“The story,” said Orris, “is that the lion

catches the mouse and the mouse says to

the lion, ‘If you don’t eat me, I’ll do you a

great favor someday.’ The lion laughs —

ha ha ha. How could something as small

as a mouse do a huge creature like him

a favor? But he lets the mouse go.
