After the Helsinki incident (see Helsinki XXX case # REDACTED, ChevalierF), Topside felt the pressure to attempt to re-create the Leda genetic identicals, in the hope that a second generation would be viable.

At that, the project was something less than a success. Without access to the genetic original, whose identity was lost in the fire that reportedly claimed the life of Ethan Duncan, the process proved diffi cult to replicate.

More than four hundred genetic identicals were bred between 2005 and 2006, with only a dozen surviving past infancy, and only one surviving past the age of two.

That one survivor was formally adopted by Marion Bowles of Topside and given the name Charlotte. While Charlotte did survive, her life has been difficult, as she suffers from multiple genetic defects that leave her with stunted legs, a limited diet, and poor stamina.

To her credit, she has overcome most of these difficulties, and she remains a bright child. She has been homeschooled by Bowles and several privately hired tutors. After Bowles’s death, she was sent to an undisclosed location to continue her tutoring in secret.
