Pleiones are terrestrial, temperate plants that thrive in cool conditions. They originate from the cool climates in Asia, particularly Taiwan (ROC), China, and the Himalayas, where their habitats are mainly rocky outcrops. Pleiones occur mostly in pink and white, although a rare species does flower brilliantly yellow. Hybrids have brought a range of new hues from whites through to pinks and yellows to deep apricot tones.

These fascinating little orchids are easy to grow and can be cultivated on a cool north-facing windowsill in the northern hemisphere, or in a cold frame or cold greenhouse that is protected from deep frosts. Pleiones are truly miniature orchids and are cultivated by many plant growers and collectors other than orchid specialists. Collectors of alpine plants usually have them in their plant collections.
