STATE TREASURER

Soon I had my first view of the magnitude of running for statewide office. In 2007, Governor Sanford asked me if I was interested in being state treasurer. The current treasurer had been indicted, and they needed someone to take the position until the next election could be held. This would require confirmation by the state legislature, and anyone who follows South Carolina politics knows that Mark Sanford and the legislature mixed about as well as oil and water.

In 2004, the governor walked into the legislature carrying two pigs to make a point about pork in the state budget. Governor Sanford’s objective was to make a point very clearly, and to do so in a provocative manner. This only served to further widen the chasm between the governor and the General Assembly.
