Chapter 8
Fletcher woke slowly. He had a hard time thinking where he was, and when he stretched out, the burning pain of the sun touching his bare skin made it all come rushing back. Opening his eyes, he looked down at the dead man that lay over him. Tossing him away, Fletcher took a quick inventory of his body.
His arm was mending but still pained him terribly. He knew that breaks like he’d had would take a few more feedings to heal completely, so that didn’t worry him overly much. His belly was still tender as well, but he thought he could stand now if necessary. But there would be no more running from crazed shifters anytime soon. Using the wall as support, Fletcher made his way to a standing position only to fall back again. His legs simply would not hold his weight. It took him nearly an hour of breathing slowly and moving even more slowly for him to be able to move back deeper into the building so he wouldn’t burn before the sun completely went down. He would have to rest before he could try to move out again, and feed. And try as hard as he could, no other humans came to him.
It took him nearly all his strength and over three hours before he felt as if he could move on his own. The loss of his fingers bothered him, and he hoped that Sloan was sick on them, assuming he was the one who had bitten him. Things were a blur now that he’d had time to think. And he was pretty sure that he’d killed one, maybe even as many as two of his attackers before it was all done. He was nearly to his house when he realized that something was off about the scene in front of him. He just stared at the house that he’d been living in for so long, as if it were a surreal painting that he just didn’t get.
The house was aflame. He watched as the firefighters, a good two dozen of them, stood by and watched the flames lick at the house he’d called home for over two decades. They were joking around and holding onto the equipment they had in their hands as if they were drinking beer at a block party.
“You’re not even going to try and save it?” The first fireman turned and looked at him while shaking his head. “Don’t you think you should make some sort of effort to save even a small portion? I mean, this was someone’s home.” Mine! He wanted to scream at him. The man looked back at the house, then at him. The smile he gave him made Fletcher think of Crane, and he took a step back from him.
“Nah, we did all we could and that was just to keep the other houses on either side of it from going up. But it’s a loss…was pretty much by the time the match was lit to start it.
