Chapter Eleven

I've been careful, evaluated the situation and his qualifications like I would've done with anyone else. At least on paper, George is the perfect candidate. Still, I'm having trouble trusting someone else, when Akhil's betrayal still stings so sharply.

Looking over at him sitting at the spare PC, concentrating hard on whatever's on screen, I try to justify my actions further and swallow my apprehension. He seems dependable, and truly motivated. Fingers crossed this goes well, and I haven't made a massive mistake.

How many people would have been happy to come here on a Sunday morning, to potentially work through the day and into the evening, preparing for a presentation that isn't even their job, technically? Nobody would have, yet here he is. True, I did offer him compensation above industry standard, but that's hardly the point. He didn't even seem to be listening when I mentioned the money.

"So we're shooting for a four week development time, plus 1 week troubleshooting and testing?" George asks, looking up from the revised proposal I'd just shared with him.

"That's right. And we've got to have our ducks in a row within the next two days, and present it to the client."

It's a very tight schedule, considering the amount of custom programming required to make his restaurant website one of the most cutting-edge in the industry. Cleary needs a fully integrated booking system of course, and a shiny user interface for customers and staff alike. This isn't just a matter of sticking a standard table reservation software in there. If that's what he wanted, he could've hired any old hack.

"It's ambitious, but not impossible. What system do you use to manage the development team?"

"Akhil used to be in charge of that, and he just sort of handled it all by email and Skype."

"Right. No problem." George scratches his beard, looking a bit unimpressed.

"How about I introduce you to the main players?" I suggest.

He nods and I get right to work, sending out emails to the senior freelancers. It had been a massive oversight on my part to give Akhil so much autonomy as project manager. Frankly, I don't really know how he managed everyone one-to-one while still having the time to report back to me.

I'd grown accustomed to instant and accurate responses, despite the time-difference between India and here. Yet when I tried to take over last week, it felt like I was getting bullshitted at every turn. It just hadn't worked quite the same. And now I've thrown George into this shit as well. Great. He's so going to hate me for this.

Glancing over again, I see he has logged on to Skype and is furiously typing away at something. I recognize the profile image in the chat window as one of the main programmers, Neeraj, who has been working for me for the past three years. Best to leave them to it, get to know one another.

"I'll make us some tea," I say, and George nods in approval.

On my way down the
