Chapter Thirteen

Three o’clock in the afternoon rolled around and so did a rather dramatic thunderstorm. Half of the dance floor had yet to be dismantled, but I figured I could leave that to the guys as I made a dash indoors to the kitchen. There, I had a quick meeting with the head chef to discuss the progress of the picnic food preparation. He assured me things were well in hand food-wise and then led me through to one of the pantry areas, where all the picnic decorations were currently being stored.

I double checked the piles of colourful checked blankets, a croquet set, a lawn balls set and forty large wicker baskets waiting to be filled with all the assorted goodies the kitchen staff were busily preparing. Sterling silver champagne buckets filled with ice and the very best French bubbly would be placed next to each picnic rug.

Frowning, I noted the number of smeared fingerprints currently marring several of the empty ice buckets. Hunting down a silver cloth I went to work rubbing and buffing away the smears. Ah yes, the glamorous life of a party event planner.

Finished with the buckets I checked my list. I still needed to contact the police about the gondolas and speak to someone on the grounds crew about setting out all the oil burning torches that we intended to use to light this evenings picnic area.

That just left two hundred extraneous little annoying things on my list to deal with yet. Oooh, the wedding cake! Since I was here I should definitely check on whether we could serve at least a tier or two at tonight’s picnic.

In the off shoot kitchen where Magda had put the cake together it took me some fumbling around to find the correct light switch. Finally with enough fluorescent lights beaming to be seen from the moon I made my way to the refrigeration unit where the cake was being stored.

It took a little extra effort on my part to open the big stainless steel fridge door, I was four steps into the refrigeration unit before my mind managed to process what I was seeing.

I don’t think I screamed. It was more of a loud moan that echoed off the steel walls and bounced back at me eerily. I really didn’t want to find another dead body, and I really didn’t want to find this body in particular. The bride was dead and not just dead.

It had taken a while for my thought processes to catch up to the fact that Jami Olsen, nee Creswell, had been murdered.

The big honking cake knife sticking out of her chest could not be denied. Then I noticed the blood.

I think I mentioned before I have a bit of a phobia when it comes to blood, so whilst the body itself didn’t freak me out, the sight of blood staining the formerly pristine white bodice of her wedding dress sent me into a full blown panic.

Now I know enough about crime scenes from watching TV to know the last thing the police need is for the witness to throw up on it.
