Any true fan of Harry will know that he has had a few headline-grabbing relationships. Of course, one cannot believe everything they read - especially from the notorious British tabloids - however, if one picks through the pieces of the various news reports, it is possible to speculate realistically about the truths behind the rumours.

Caroline Flack

The first of Harry’s relationships to hit the headlines was his fling with Caroline Flack - a presenter he first met on The Xtra factor - a support show broadcast hand-in-hand with the full talent competition.

What made the relationship unusual (for some at least) was the age difference between the two love-birds. Caroline was thirty-two - a full fifteen years older than Harry’s tender seventeen years of age. Whilst on the surface, there is nothing wrong with this, some commentators have offered a viewpoint of ‘role reversal’ - how would people see things if a thirty-two year old man was dating a young, seventeen year old wannabe?

It is of course impossible to comment on the rights-and-wrongs of a relationship without knowing all the details. Without further evidence to support another viewpoint, it is sensible to accept that both Harry and Caroline were dating for all the right reasons - they enjoyed each other’s company, they had a mutual feeling of affection and the relationship wasn’t based on any media-focused reasons.

At first, Harry was happy to declare his affection for Caroline, however as time progressed and the media-storm increased, he became more defensive. One thing that Harry probably lacked at the time (despite one imagines the help he had from Syco’s support and PR staff), was knowledge of the media - and he appeared to walk openly into their spider-web.

Caroline was pretty open about things throughout their time together (and afterwards). She appeared on television to defend their relationship, saying that people are generally not accepting of above-average age-gaps between two people, and that there was nothing intrinsically wrong with it.

In this author’s opinion, she is right - of course the average Directioner will feel an element of jealousy towards Caroline - after all, who wouldn’t want to date Harry - however can one blame her? Wouldn’t you take the opportunity if it was offered to you, even if you were older?

Sadly - for Harry and Caroline at least - their relationship ended in the latter half of January 2012. He stressed their decision to split was mutual, and that it was an amicable break-up - in his words she was ‘one of the kindest, sweetest people’ he knew.

Lucy Horobin

In June of 2012, a huge media storm blew up about revelations that Harry had had a brief fling with married DJ Lucy Horobin. She had interviewed One Direction back in 2011 before Harry had begun dating Caroline.

Scandal seemed to be the word on everyone’s lips - was Harry a home-wrecker? How could he convince a married woman to cheat on her husband?
