Chapter 7: Elle

From what Elle could determine, only the three youngest Forbes brothers had been in on the prank.

"How could you?" She stared in dismay at her new, not-so-fake brothers-in-law. "In all my years on this earth, I've learned the thing I value most is honesty." As soon as the words left her mouth, a twinge of guilt worked its way through her chest. She hadn't exactly been honest in using her goddess powers to enthrall Bash in bed. She'd done it to bind him to her as her protector. He probably would have done it willingly anyway, but she hadn't trusted him enough to do so on his own accord.

Trust him, love him, and be loved by him. Those were Ruby’s marching orders, but so far all Elle had done was second guess herself and Bash every second they were together.

Branson, Asher, and Kip's expression grew stricken at her tone, and none of them seemed to be able to look her straight in the eye.

Bash's hand on his glass of champagne tightened until the stem shattered. "This wasn't supposed to be one of your games. This was supposed to be about the safety of the woman I truly care about."

Kip shrugged, twirled the sealed safe in his hands, and tossed it at Bash. "Well, pardon me for caring, but I happen to think you two are perfect for each other. Just wanted you to be happy. If that's a crime, then stab me in the heart with a wooden stake or annul the marriage. Either way, it's your loss." He stormed from the room, hands jammed in his pockets.

When Elle met Tina Lee's sympathetic gaze, the room grew too stifling to remain in it. "If you'll excuse me," she mumbled. "I think I need a moment alone." She fled to Bash's suite, unzipping her formal gown the moment she slammed the door shut. She peeled out of it and tossed it over a chair, thoroughly distraught.

"I'm married. I'm actually fucking married." Tears blurred her eyes as she stumbled into the walk-in closet. It was an event her parents should have been able to attend. It was so unfair that they'd not lived long enough to see it. Her mother should have been there to help her don her wedding dress and up-do her hair, and her father should have walked her down the aisle. But some unknown assailant had stolen every one of those precious moments from them, an assailant who remained uncaught and unpunished.

"Damn you!" she sobbed, bending over double as the pain overtook her. "Damn you for ripping two such amazing people out of my life! They didn't deserve it. They so didn't deserve it."

Her distraught mind raced over every detail she could recall about the events leading up to their deaths. They'd received anonymous threats in the mail. Their car tires had been slashed. They'd received hang up phone calls, and both had reported to the Underworld Council that they sensed they were being followed.

Upon their deaths, by birthright, their shared seat on the Underworld Council had gone to Elle.
