NINETEEN

XENA ST. JAMES

Late Sunday Morning

I blink until my heavy eyelids open all the way. Low gray clouds and a dimming effect on the windows mute the light in the room.

“Umm,” I moan, smiling. It has been years since I’ve slept like a baby.

I thrust myself up into the sitting position and push the soft sheet and heavenly duvet down my legs. I feel good—I feel real good.

I reach over for my cellphone and look for the time.

“Yikes!”

I’m on my feet and scurrying into my walk-in closet, which I am in love with, and throw on my fluffy white robe. However, I pause to briefly consider wearing something shorter and silkier, but that would be too obvious. Plus, I’m in the process of weaning myself off wanting Lynx in a sexual way. So I keep the longer, bulkier robe on, then quickly brush my teeth and wash my face. I’m halfway down the hallway when I hear Lynx arguing with a woman whose voice definitely belongs to Penelope.

Lynx says, “This is how you wanted it.”

“Not anymore,” she replies.

I stand very still and silence my breathing in the seconds of ensuing silence.

“I don’t know what to say, Penelope,” Lynx says in a tone a girl who’s in love with a man hates to hear from him.

“Are you fucking her still?”

I stiffen because they’re talking about me.

“I’m not fucking anybody.”

“You’re fucking me!” she says extra loudly.

Lynx starts speaking, but his voice is cut off abruptly. I hear the faint sound of my cellphone chiming, telling me I have a text message. I run back to my bedroom and swipe my device off the nightstand. It’s a message from Lynx: Sorry, I missed you. I have a training session. Lunch is in the warmer. Talk Later.

For some reason, I don’t believe him. But that’s okay, Lynx’s argument with Penelope and his text message serve as a reality check, one that I need to remember, he is not the man for me.
