lthough 2000 and 2001 were difficult years for Nightwish, with many problems bubbling beneath the surface, the Wishmaster era was successful beyond their wildest dreams—a glimpse of the wide international popularity to come. In Finland, Wishmaster remained in the Top 40 for sixteen weeks, holding the number one position for two weeks. In Germany, the album went to number twenty-one, and in France, number sixty-six. In addition, the first North American releases were available, initial inroads had been made in the Asian market, and hysterical audiences in Russia and South America promised a positive future for the band.
In November 2001, Spinefarm released the four-CD box set 1997–2001, outlining the band’s career so far. At the same time, the band’s merchandise business had expanded to the point that Nightwish decided it best to take it over for themselves. The band opened an online shop on their web site, and launched an international mail order service.
While Nightwish enjoyed a honeymoon with the Finnish media, no move of the increasingly successful band went unreported by the faithful press. In the yearly readers’ poll of the teen magazine Suosikki, Nightwish was voted Band of the Year for the second consecutive time. In the Soundi poll, Tarja was awarded prizes for Finnish Singer of the Year and Most Wonderful Person of the Year. “Over the Hills and Far Away” was voted Finnish Song of the Year. Also of note was a third-place showing in the category Best Finnish Band.
Soon Nightwish began preparing to record its next album, Century Child. All things considered—with promising new song material, a new bass player, new managers, and other improvements—the future seemed brighter than ever. After a promo shoot in December, however, Tarja called a band meeting at Hemingway’s restaurant in Sörnäinen, Helsinki, and dropped a bombshell. She told her bandmates that she was first and foremost a classical singer, and that from then on, she would prioritize her solo career first. The next album would be her last with Nightwish.
