Chapter 18

"What about a deer?" Todd asked, sweeping up the last of the wood shavings from the floor as I glued several small lean-tos on the hillside of our sculpture.

"I don't really think it would fit very well with the rest of the piece," I said, wondering why he thought we needed a deer on the hillside.

"Not for the project." He laughed, putting the broom back in the corner of my studio. "For your next carving. When I shift."

"Oh." I put away my carving tools, keeping my back to him. "I guess."

Honestly, the thought of doing this still really bothered me so I hadn't given it much thought. My feelings for Todd made it difficult to imagine the scenario objectively.

"I don't want to shift into something dangerous," he said. "Don't want to take a chance on hurting you."

I sat down at my laptop, thinking how impossible it was to maintain any sort of perspective when he said things like that. I typed the web address for the discussion forum, watching the various discussion topics load onto the screen until I felt able to respond without my emotions betraying me.

"I don't think you'd hurt me, regardless," I responded, still not looking at him. "If you're comfortable with that, it's fine."

"Just want to play it safe." He scooted a chair close to mine. "This weekend isn't supposed to be so frigid. What about Saturday night?"

I had no plans on Saturday night. I never did.

"What will you tell your parents?" I asked, turning away from the computer screen to look at him

"That I have a date." He smiled.

"Todd."

"What?"

"We aren't dating." As if I really wanted to point that out to him.

"Fine then." He slumped in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees. "I'll just tell them I'm going to hang out with some friends."

I turned back to the laptop, adrenaline bursting through me when I saw a new post in the skinwalking discussion.

"Hey, we got a hit."

Todd leaned even closer as I clicked the discussion. I could feel the heat from his breath on my shoulder as he eyed the screen with me. His nearness wreaked havoc on my resolve. I felt like my heart was somehow reaching for him... stretching and squeezing... creating a pain that radiated throughout my body. Everything in me wanted to turn my head and put my lips on his. It wouldn't take much, just a slight bit of movement, and then...

Finally! The page loaded. The post was from someone called NightShader.

I read out loud.

I've heard a little about skinwalking. I read somewhere about a curse where a man changes forms, but not on purpose. It's like it happens to him against his will. No idea on the details of how or why.

"A curse?" I said, trying to fit that piece of the puzzle into what we already had, which was next to nothing.

"Well, that gives us something," Todd replied.

"Another question."

"Instead of just shifting or skinwalking, now we can search for skinwalking and a curse."

He had a point.
