“Clara, it’s amazing. You should see it.” Reuben clucked the reins, urging the horses to go faster.

“I did see it, silly. I was there, remember?” Clara batted at his arm. “You’re mighty talkative today, Reuben Milner. I’m not sure the last time I saw you this excited.” Clara smiled up at him, clutching his arm when they hit a rut in the road. “What has gotten into you?”

Even if Reuben was taking Clara to sewing circle again, once her father left, Reuben had been able to finish rearranging the furniture. He had been elbow deep in sawdust when Clara and Lyla appeared at the workshop door reminding him Clara still needed a ride. He’d wanted to huff that she should have just ridden with Mem, but he was still riding high on his morning working with Lyla. The dawdi house was so close. Maybe next month, or the next, he wouldn’t have to accept a check from Brother Jonathan—the community.

“It’s going to be perfect. I can’t wait to have it all finished.” Despite the frustrations of the afternoon, Reuben still got excited when he thought of how close they were to being done.

“It sounds great, Reuben, really it does. And everything you’ve done so far has given it so much character, but how is it going to work exactly?” Clara hadn’t let go of his arm after that last rut. Her hand rested on his like she had claims to it. Reuben’s brow furrowed. He didn’t want her to have claims to him. He didn’t want to be claimable.

Or maybe he wanted to be claimed by Lyla.

But what would that mean for his future and joining the church? Would admitting feelings for Lyla mean he had decided not to join?

Reuben snapped the reins, urging Sheba to pick up the pace. “What do you mean, how does it work?”

“Well, once you’re married.” Clara’s face turned beet red at the talk of marriage, but still she continued. “Your mem and sisters need somewhere to go. Wouldn’t they move out of the big house and into the dawdi house? If you’re renting it out, where are they supposed to go?”

“I’m not going to kick my mem and sisters out of the big house,” he scoffed. “I’m not just going to take my mother’s house from her.” Reuben knew if things were different, Mem would move to the dawdi house, but it didn’t make sense for his mem to move. The big house was the home Mem and Dat had built together. He knew how much his mother loved that house. The way things were done or not, he wasn’t going to take it from her. Besides, his siblings were still young. How would his whole passel of sisters fit in the dawdi house?

“Are you going to build your own house then?” Clara asked.

He fisted the reins tighter. Even when Brother Jonathan wasn’t around, Reuben was still being interrogated by him. “I’m not planning on building my own house.” There was no point. His mem and sisters needed him yet, and it was his fault his dat wasn’t here to take care of them.
