And if you can teach someone—son, daughter, buddy, the other half of your couple, reader, protegé, or protegée—teach them to listen, not just to what you say, but also to what the wind and the animals and the dead hunters say. And teach them to keep listening, keep thinking, and keep formulating their ideas.

My stepson, Jackson, is nineteen. He has long since passed his hunter safety course and has killed three deer. Last year he bought a custom longbow from a local maker. I am pleased to see that he does not yet use it in the field, because, he candidly admits, “I’m not good enough yet.”

These are the things I watch. He now goes to a local informal shotgun course to shoot with his mother. He handles my proud touchy goshawk, Sara, with grace and gentleness; she likes him, and not too many goshawks accept more than one servant. He listens to her—she has taught him to move slowly, to keep his bird hand high and his other hand low. She’ll sometimes turn her sickle-billed head upside down to greet him. I think he’ll be a hunter, a real one, which means he will show honor in the field.
