On average, participants used 2.1 types of childcare. Although consistent with MacKay’s findings in Britain that families tend to use more than one type of childcare, our findings suggest that Canadian families of multiples use more forms of childcare than families of multiples in the United Kingdom. Thus, families rely on full-time and part-time childcare solutions, including care by family members (grandparents, siblings, other family members), in-home care (nanny, au pair, babysitter), daycares and day homes, educational programs (preschool, nursery school) and before and after school care. They used registered or regulated options, and private childcare solutions to meet their needs (e.g., most care provided by family, nannies, and babysitters would be considered unregulated) (see Table 3).
