Native Americans utilized beaver pelts for warm clothing, stitching the skins together for robes. Traders soon discovered that used beaver robes were superior to new skins, because they were saturated with the oils the Native Americans had rubbed on their bodies. Therefore the traders were willing to pay high prices for used Native American robes.

The beaver has donated more to the world than its pelt. Its dams, by stopping the outflow of silt, create areas of richly fertile, arable land. For this reason, such silted areas were highly valued by North America’s pioneers, who termed them “beaver meadows.” The beaver acts as a conscientious environmentalist by reclaiming land along streams in wasteland areas. Had the beaver been properly protected during the past three hundred years, the value of its flood-control work would have outweighed the total worth of all pelts seized.
