Skeleton Weed

Lygodesmia juncea

Between the hairy, grey-leaved plants of the dry regions and the leafless, bulbous-stemmed cacti, is the queerest plant of the arid regions. It is known as the skeleton weed, or prairie pink. The stems are fat and very grey; the leaves are reduced to a minimum and are formed like tiny bracts; the florets, though numerous in other plants of the same family, are limited to five. The pale pink, rather attractive flowers, which open in the hot sunshine, last but a short time.

This flower, more than any other, should have warned men against ploughing up the prairie of the dust bowl region and planting the shallow-rooted crops which were easily destroyed by winds and shifting earth. With deep thick roots, scanty foliage and even a minimum of petals, it has adapted itself to the hard life which was too much for the softer grains.
