That night, just before midnight, the scene at New Delhi’s new international airport is the usual bedlam. I have just checked in. My informant and I are standing in front of the metal detector shaking hands. Reaching down to the folder that he has held clutched under his arm ever since we left the house, he hands it to me and says, “This is for you.”

“What is it?”

“You’ll see.”

“Well,” I say, looking down at it, “thanks, for whatever it is. And thanks for everything else too. It’s been great.”

“My pleasure. Just remember, don’t do anything stupid in Southeast Asia, will you?”

“I won’t.”

I turn and place all the things I am carrying, the folder included, on the conveyor belt of the x-ray machine. I wait a moment until I receive the okay from the guard, then pass through the metal detector. By the time I have retrieved my things and think to look back, he is gone.
