The grated door opened.

“This is awkward,” Kyle said to Cole and the guy he thought was probably Cole’s brother Thrace.

“It certainly is,” the guy said, not taking his eyes off Kyle.

“I’d like to know what the problem is,” Cole said.

“He tried to kill Gregory!”

“Who?” Kyle asked. “I don’t know any—”

“Me, you son of a bitch. You tried to kill me.” Said by a man who had obviously entered while Kyle was trying to leave. Kyle recognized Cole’s brother from that shadowy night in the chained lot behind the building where the criminal Jordane had made his lair, but he didn’t recognize this other man. But there had definitely been two guys who got away that night, even if Kyle hadn’t been able to see the other one clearly.

Kyle crossed his arms and tried to ignore the churning in his gut that had gotten considerably worse in the last few minutes. “If you worked for Jordane, then you have only yourself to blame.”

“Oh, you think so? Who the hell are you to—”

“This is Kyle,” Cole said, giving the guy named Gregory a short stare. Then he turned his attention to his brother Thrace. “We’re fucking, so don’t screw it up. You don’t want to know everything I’ve had to go through to get to that point with him. He’s the reason I finally got around to a third form.”

“Third form?” Gregory said. “Which one of your brothers is this?”

“He’s Raymond’s friend,” Cole added, still addressing Thrace.

“The guy who kidnapped Dominay?” Thrace said, his gaze narrowing on Kyle further.

“Damn it, I might as well be talking to myself.” But then Gregory took a second piercing look at Cole and said, “Okay, wait a—” Then Gregory breathed in sharply, nostrils flaring wide at the sudden intake of air before he said, loud with disbelief, “For the sake of all that’s holy, is this Colet?”

“Do I look like Colet?” Cole asked Gregory, following up with a disgusted look at Thrace. “Didn’t you explain this to him yet?”

“We’ve been busy,” Thrace said, the flicker of his eyes toward Gregory making Kyle certain he didn’t want to know what exactly being busy had entailed, “and I never found the time since you just sprang the news on me yesterday.”

“Fine,” Cole said. He palmed his crotch. “See, this is how it works, Gregory. Cole has a dick. Colet didn’t. Want to see it?”

Thrace shoved Cole backward and stepped completely in front of Gregory. “No, he does not want to see it!”

Cole staggered against the corner of the liftcage with a startlingly loud rattle, the façade of his human so thin the air seemed to vibrate with the energy of his reversion held in check. Kyle felt the buzzing tingle crawl over every last bit of skin he had. Thrace shivered, his monster so near the surface that Kyle was actually surprised when nothing happened in the next instant except for Cole’s huff of breath and another rattle of the liftcage when he pushed off to stand upright again.
