HMS Challenger, circa 1872
For centuries even the most learned scientists assumed that no life-form could survive at the greatest depths of the oceans. That notion prevailed until a four-year, around-the-world expedition took place in the mid-1880s. A British steam-assisted sailing ship called the HMS Challenger (a two-hundred-foot warship converted for scientific purposes) sounded the oceans’ floors to depths beyond twenty-six thousand feet and, using miles of hemp rope and piano wire attached to primitive, refrigerator-size “sampling trawls” made of cloth and wood, hauled up hundreds of muddy loads from the bottom of every ocean on the planet and wound up with more than 4,700 new species of life, ranging from dozens of varieties of deep-sea sponges, sea urchins, tube worms, and plankton to otherworldly species of lobsters, clams, shrimp, sea spiders, and even fish. With that, the theories of a lifeless sea bottom were put to rest.
