The day after the dinner, Elizabeth was engaged to shop with her aunt and Miss Darcy. Charity had been forced to decline the invitation as she had other engagements that day, but the three ladies gathered together and visited the shops on Bond Street, enjoying one another’s company immensely.

Elizabeth had never been precisely fond of shopping, though that was likely as much due to her mother’s propensity for dominating her purchases with styles she found unappealing. This day however, was engaged mostly in browsing, and though the ladies did make some small purchases, on the whole, they enjoyed one another’s company rather than concentrating on buying.

The previous evening had been all Elizabeth had hoped for. Mr. Darcy had made his admiration for her plain, and Elizabeth had spent the dinner hour in earnest conversation with him. And if Miss Bingley watched her with a smug expression every time Charity said something to her or glared at Elizabeth if she thought she was engaged in speaking too much with Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth could do nothing but laugh at the woman’s absurdity and ignore her glares. “Then it is well, though the conversation at the foot of the table was not quite so . . . scintillating.” “I do not know,” said Elizabeth, by now barely holding her laughter, “it seemed to be quite animated at times.”

There was only time for her friend to direct a severe look at her before they were joined by the woman of whom they were—obliquely—talking.

“Lady Charity!” exclaimed Miss Bingley, “I cannot tell you how wonderful dinner was. You created a memorable culinary experience and made us all feel so welcome. And all at such a young age too!”

It was almost too much for Elizabeth when Charity rolled her eyes at Elizabeth; Elizabeth was not even certain Miss Bingley was unable to see it!

“I thank you, Miss Bingley. But my mother is a countess, after all. She would not have raised a daughter who was incapable of performing as a competent hostess.”

“And her efforts have been an admirable success! You are to be commended.”

“Dinner truly was lovely, Charity,” said Elizabeth. “I would love to obtain the recipe for the dessert when convenient. My mother would adore it.”

“Perhaps,
