CHAPTER SEVEN

Martin drove home slowly. His daughters were already in bed, thanks to his mother, so he took his time. He needed to think without any external distractions except the wind blowing through the windows. The wind was refreshing and cleared his mind so he could decide what in the world he was going to do about Lydia.

He was falling in love with her. Everything about her made her perfect for him, and he was sure she would be just as perfect with his daughters. It was important to him that a woman he brought into their lives was good with children, and he wanted his daughters to love her just as much as he did. He hadn’t brought a woman into their lives as yet because he hadn’t met one he thought was good enough to introduce to his daughters.

Lydia was everything he’d wished for in a woman. She was kind, good, and strong, beautiful and fantastic with children. He could see she was filled with love just bursting to get out, and he imagined she would share that love with his girls, who needed it, as his mother reminded him regularly.

It had been for only a fraction of a second, but it had happened. So I’ll just have to work harder to convince her that it’s ok to love me back, Martin thought to himself with a smile. She might present a challenge, but he was up to the challenge. They were perfect for each other, he was sure of it. And he would convince her.

I’m not the kind of girl who falls for a man so quickly. She moved away from the door and laid her bag on the table. She asked herself the important question: Am I falling in love with him? And she was terrified the answer was yes.

Logically, she couldn’t possibly be falling in love with him. They’d known each other less than a week, and she knew nothing about his past. For that matter, he didn’t know anything about her past either. She wasn’t ready to share her past with him just yet, but that didn’t stop how she was feeling about him.

Emotionally, she could feel herself tumbling, and quickly. Her heart wasn’t listening to her head, no matter how loudly it yelled at her to run away. She went through the process of making a cup of chamomile tea as her heart debated with her mind. As she filled the kettle with water and slipped the tea bags in, she asked herself another important question: Can I see a future with him?

In her imagination, she
