Watson and Neale (2012) have suggested the use of media texts as a starting point for critical and creative engagement with numeracy (see also Stack, Watson, Hindley, Samson, & Devlin, 2010). This is illustrated in Whitlin and Whitlin’s (2003) example of cross-curricular numeracy, whereby primary aged learners developed critical numeracy skills through a unit of work on television advertisements. In graphing the various devices utilised across a range of television advertisements and plotting these against variables such as timeslot, product price and nutritional composition, the learners were able to utilise critical numeracy skills to hypothesise about the authors’ intentions and the linguistic and stylistic devices employed to appeal to certain demographic groups. This critical attention to how mathematical concepts are utilised to persuade and manipulate the reader/listener/viewer provides an important opportunity for critical literacy and numeracy and fits closely with the text analyst repertoire of the Four Resources of the Reader (Freebody & Luke, 1990).
