Chapter Seventeen
Scatch didn't question the Creator's command but wondered why he'd been assigned this task. He'd never been asked to violate the dream of a citizen of the Realm. For a split second, he experienced a small thrill of fear. What was she doing here? What if he were discovered? Would there be repercussions? Then reason took control. What difference would it make if he broke a rule or covenant? His order came from a Dark Lord.
So here he was, watching two young women sleep. One slept dreamlessly. The other, his target, relived her day. Curious about her, he slid easily into her dream.
She was in a library, checking her smartwatch every minute or so, eager to finish the day's work. But not so eager, she ignored what ensued. Scatch had to rely on his target's perceptions to understand the situation.
Eight people sat at a table, all males. Despite signs calling for quiet, they were loud. They threw wads of paper and shouted obscenities at a slight-in-stature male who wore thick glasses and looked incapable of defending himself against even the smallest male at the table.
From his target's mind, he learned the men seated at the table were on the University football team. The fellow who looked every bit the part of a bookworm seemed to be trying his best to ignore the insults and taunts.
That prompted the largest football player to leave his seat and swagger to the bookworm's table. "You looking at me, boy?"
"No." The bookworm stared at the screen of his tablet on the table before him.
"Yes, you were."
"I don't want any trouble."
"Ain't that a shame? I do." The football player placed both hands on the table and leaned over to shove his face in that of the bookworm.
What happened next shocked everyone, including Scatch. Four tentacles burst through the clothing of the bookworm, one on each shoulder and two more from his sides, about waist level. In two seconds, all four tentacles had hold of the football player and lifted him a good six feet off the floor.
Upside down.
The sounds of Mr. Football's screams were barely discernable above the laughter and taunts of the other people in the library. Scatch's target hurried to pull a selfie stick from her backpack, slap her phone into it and record a short video of herself narrating the event.
It only took seconds, then she put her things away, checked her watch, and headed for the exit, putting her hand to her belly. Scatch could almost feel the hunger vibrating through her and into him.
Once outside, she pulled out her phone to search for restaurants in the area. That gave him pause. Was she not familiar with the area? He wished he knew more about who she was and her possible significance to this mission.
He stewed on that as she arranged a ride and headed for the meeting point. It wasn't long before a car the color of pond scum pulled up, and she got into the back seat. Scatch didn't pay much attention to the conversation between her and the driver except to note her name.
