20 Things Every Man Should Know About Weddings & Style

There is going to be a time for each of us when we will be invited to a wedding. Whether you’re invited as a wedding guest or a plus-one, there is some simple etiquette you should know. I’m going to give you a list of eight things to help you be the best wedding guest or wedding date around.

Dress appropriately, I can’t stress this enough. There is nothing worse than a guy showing up to an event not dressed correctly. Do whatever you have to do beforehand to make sure you look up to par for the wedding. Pay attention to the dress code; if the invite says black tie optional, then that what it means. It’s an option for you to dress black tie, but honestly, when in doubt, wear a damn navy suit, white oxford shirt, and brown shoes. As long as you don’t show up in shorts and a tank top (unless otherwise stated by the wedding party), then you should be good to go.

Come to the wedding prepared. The second worst thing after dressing inappropriately is showing up half dressed. Being the Notoriously Dapper gentleman I am, I know how to tie a bow tie and necktie. It is shocking to me how many guys don’t know how to do either. I have had to tie ties for people at weddings. Honestly, in my opinion it looks bad when you show up to a wedding with an untied tie in your hand searching for someone to tie your tie. It’s not a good look. Try and be more prepared when you’re attending a wedding. Don’t show up with an untied tie, unlaced shoes, untucked shirt, etc. Take a few seconds to just get your attire together. Remember people will remember two things about you: how you looked (whether appropriate or inappropriate) and how you made them feel, good or bad.

Once you’ve got the look down, then you need to show up ON TIME! Don’t be that wedding guest who rolls in after the bride has walked down the isle. Do your very best to be on time. It’s a plus for you, because you get to find a good seat and chat a little bit with some people you will be spending the evening with at the reception. On top of showing up on time, make sure you don’t show up empty-handed. At least give them a card congratulating them on their wedding. This may vary though, sometimes the wedding party will insist that no one bring gifts; in that case, don’t worry about it. I personally think it’s a nice gesture to at least give them a card with a few kind words. People cherish things of that sort.

Mingle your way around and meet some of the wedding guests.
