TWENTY-ONE

In her defense, she did knock on the front door. When no one answered, she tiptoed inside. They lived together, or had lived together, and she definitely wasn’t going to steal anything.

Rather than storm straight in, as Toria would, she knocked on the bedroom door. They weren’t having sex, as far as she could tell.

“Is that one of your people?” Roxie’s voice carried from inside.

She popped the door just out of its frame. “Roxie?”

“Yours,” Zairn mumbled.

“Jane,” Roxie said. “Get in here.” She peeked around the door. Roxie was sitting up on the far side of the bed. “Come over here.” Going in, she closed the door and dropped her purse at the end of the bed. “What’s going on? Is it Toria?”

“I need to talk,” she whispered, crouching by the bed. “Can we talk?”

“Yeah,” Roxie said, scooting back to lift the covers. Slipping onto the bed, she lay on her side, sharing Roxie’s pillow. “What happened?”

“I ended things with Knox.”

“Oh,” Roxie said, stroking her hair. “Are you okay? That’s not what we talked about.”

“I couldn’t do it anymore. It wasn’t fair on either of us.”

“You want to get drunk? Where’s Toria?”

“In the club,” Jane said. “She went with some of the LIP girls.”

“Do you want me to get changed? We can go up there.”

“Take Ballard,” Zairn mumbled from the other side of Roxie.

“I’m not waking Ballard up,” Roxie said, tipping her head more his way. “It’s a nightclub—”

“No, I don’t want to—I woke you up, I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay,” Roxie said, laying an arm over her. “We would’ve been awake if my fiancé could get it up.” The bed moved and Roxie laughed. “Ouch, okay, we did it on the beach… and on the deck… We were pretty much at it as soon as the dinner party was over.” Her head twisted Zairn’s way again. “Your prowess is no longer in question.” Roxie’s smile faded when their eyes met again. “I’m sorry, honey. How did he take it? Was he mad?”

“I don’t know what he was, it was… I’m not used to men like him.”

“No, he isn’t your regular type. Your regular type is vicious or insane. He won’t stalk you… although he would have the means to if he wanted to.”

“He wants there to be an us.”

“Oh.”

“Not a fling, an us.”

“And you don’t?”

She groaned, fake weeping as she turned her face into the pillow. “I don’t know.”

“What’s the down side? You’re obviously attracted to each other. I said already he’s a good man and he has his shit together.” When she peeked at Roxie, her friend’s face was turned away. “You don’t repeat anything you hear in our bed, Skippy.”

“Never do,” Zairn murmured. “I’m sleeping.”

“Good, thank you,” Roxie said, her fingers combing through her hair. “Tell me why you’re not sure, honey. Is it the circus? Because you get used to it. You didn’t want to do the long-distance thing again. That’s your choice. You don’t have to—”

“He said he’d move to New York.” Roxie’s mouth opened like she meant to talk, but only shock was conveyed in her expression.
