If a soil test indicates that your soil is too acidic (lower than 5.5), you can make it more alkaline by adding pulverized lime or wood ash. If your soil test indicates that your soil is too alkaline (higher than 7.5), you can make it more acidic by adding sphagnum peat, sulfur, aluminum sulfate, or organic mulches, particularly mulching with pine needles. There are also packaged soil acidifiers that you can purchase at your local garden centers. Don’t go overboard in adding any of these amendments however. Modifying the pH level of your soil is a very slow and ongoing process.
